Editorial Policy

How we research, write, verify, and update our content — and how we handle commercial relationships honestly.

DFS Memorials publishes consumer information to help families make informed decisions about cremation and end-of-life arrangements. This page explains the standards behind our content and the disclosures we make about how we earn revenue.

If you find an error, have a question about our methods, or want to suggest a correction, please contact us.

Our editorial mission

We exist to help families understand cremation and funeral options clearly, compare prices fairly, and avoid paying more than they need to. We do this by:

  • Researching real, current cremation pricing through our network of 80+ funeral homes and through publicly available General Price Lists (required of every US funeral provider under the FTC Funeral Rule).
  • Explaining state laws, federal consumer protections, and jurisdictional requirements in plain language.
  • Maintaining a directory of vetted local providers who agree to publish transparent, fixed prices.
  • Updating our content regularly as laws, prices, and industry practices change.

Editorial independence

DFS Memorials is privately owned by Nicholas and Sara Marsden-Ille. We do not accept payment for editorial coverage. Funeral homes and cremation providers cannot pay for favorable mentions in our articles, or for higher placement in our network listings.

Network membership has clear, published standards — state licensure, FTC Funeral Rule compliance, fixed transparent pricing, an independent-ownership preference, and a clean consumer-protection record. Providers either meet the standards or they don’t. The standards are not for sale.

We are not affiliated with any of the corporate funeral conglomerates (Service Corporation International, Park Lawn, Carriage Services), nor with the major national cremation chains (Neptune Society, Cremation Society of America, Trident Society) — except as independent commentators on their consumer practices. We are an independent consumer-facing network, not a competitor brand operated by an industry parent.

Who writes and reviews our content

Most editorial content on DFS Memorials is written or reviewed by Sara Marsden-Ille, our co-founder and editor. Sara has been researching and writing about the US funeral industry since 2003, when she launched US Funerals Online as one of the first independent consumer resources in the death-care space. She has been quoted in industry and consumer publications, hosts the Cremation Nation podcast, and is responsible for the editorial standards of all three properties in our network.

Our provider network content — local pricing, partner details, jurisdictional information — is maintained by Nicholas Ille and the DFS Memorials network team in collaboration with the local providers themselves.

Where we publish guest content or content from contributing writers, it is clearly bylined and reviewed by our editor before publication.

How we verify cremation pricing

Cremation prices on DFS Memorials come from two primary sources:

  1. Direct from network providers. Every provider in our network agrees to publish their direct cremation package price and to update us when prices change. Network prices are reviewed at minimum annually and as soon as a provider notifies us of a change.
  2. Independent General Price List (GPL) review. Under the FTC Funeral Rule, every US funeral provider must furnish their GPL on request. We routinely review GPLs from non-network providers, particularly when comparing prices in market-comparison articles.

Where we cite price ranges by state, city, or region, those ranges reflect our network data and supplementary GPL research. Source notes are included in our state and city guides. When we cite competitor prices in comparison content, we attempt to verify those prices against the competitor’s published GPL or current advertising, and we date our citations.

Sources we rely on

Beyond our own provider network data, we draw on:

  • National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) — annual member surveys and the General Price List Survey.
  • Cremation Association of North America (CANA) — annual cremation statistics and industry projections.
  • Federal Trade Commission (FTC) — Funeral Rule guidance and enforcement actions.
  • State funeral and cemetery regulatory boards — licensure, complaint records, and state-specific cremation laws.
  • Social Security Administration — death benefit guidance.
  • US Department of Veterans Affairs — veterans burial and cremation benefits.
  • Federal Reserve consumer surveys and major consumer-advocacy publications — for funeral cost financial-impact data.

When we cite a statistic, we attribute it. If we make an estimate based on our own data, we identify it as such.

Content updates and corrections

We review our state and city guides on a rolling basis, with each major guide reviewed at least once every twelve months. Where state laws change, FTC enforcement actions affect our content, or major price shifts occur in a market, we update sooner.

Every editorial page on the site carries a visible “Last reviewed” date so families can see when the information was last verified.

If you find an error in our content, please contact us. We correct errors promptly. Substantive corrections are noted on the page with a brief update note explaining what changed and when.

Affordable Cremation Services

Commercial relationships and disclosures

We believe families deserve to know exactly how we make money. DFS Memorials earns revenue through referral fees paid by the local provider when a family contacts the provider through our network. The fee is a fixed amount and does not vary by service type or service price. This means we have no incentive to push families toward more expensive services — our fee is the same whether the family chooses a $795 basic cremation or a $2,500 service with additional options.

We also disclose:

  • US Funerals Online is our sister property, also owned by Nicholas and Sara Marsden-Ille. USF is an independent consumer information resource. Where USF links to DFS Memorials for cremation referrals, that relationship is disclosed.
  • Travel Protection Plan is our affiliated repatriation membership product. Where we recommend travel protection, the affiliation is disclosed.
  • Local providers in our network pay only a per-referral fee. There is no charge for network membership, no charge for higher placement, and no advertising payments are accepted from non-network providers.

Provider vetting standards

Detailed criteria for joining the DFS Memorials network are summarised below. The complete network agreement is provided to all applying providers:

  • Active funeral establishment or crematory license, in good standing, in every state where the provider operates.
  • Current General Price List on file and available to families on request, in compliance with the FTC Funeral Rule.
  • Independent ownership preferred — we do not generally accept locations owned by major funeral conglomerates.
  • Commitment to a published, fixed direct cremation package price for the duration of network membership.
  • Clean state regulatory record — significant active disciplinary actions disqualify a provider.
  • Demonstrated capability to handle cremation arrangements professionally, including identification protocols and proper handling of the deceased.

We reserve the right to remove a provider from the network at any time for cause, including unresolved consumer complaints, regulatory action, or breach of network pricing commitments.
