Connecting Toronto Families with Dignified, Simple Cremation Care

Losing a loved one in Toronto — from the lakefront communities of The Beaches and Etobicoke to the diverse neighbourhoods of Scarborough, North York, York, and the inner suburbs of Mississauga and Brampton — is one of the most overwhelming experiences a family will face. The DFS Memorials network exists to take the complexity out of that moment by connecting you with a trusted, licensed, and compassionate local cremation provider who puts your family first.

We are not a traditional funeral home. DFS Memorials is the network that does the research for you — vetting local providers across the Greater Toronto Area so that you are never alone navigating a maze of high-pressure sales calls, bundled service packages, or inflated pricing from corporate funeral chains. Our Toronto partner offers one transparent flat-rate direct cremation across the GTA. No hidden disbursements. No upselling.

Toronto is Canada’s largest and most culturally diverse city, and we understand that families here represent a broad range of traditions, faiths, and community ties. Direct cremation with DFS Memorials gives your family the freedom to honour your loved one in the way that is most meaningful to you — whether that is a private gathering at home, a memorial at a place of worship, a tribute at High Park or along the Scarborough Bluffs, or a celebration of life held on your own timeline. The cremation is handled swiftly and professionally, so you have the space and time to focus on what truly matters.

What Is Included in the Toronto Direct Cremation Package?

In 2026, a traditional funeral in Toronto — including visitation, service, burial vault, and plot — can easily exceed $12,000 to $18,000. Even a cremation service arranged through a large corporate funeral home or a downtown Toronto provider can run $3,500 to $6,000 once all disbursements are accounted for.

Through DFS Memorials, our Toronto partner Sensible Choice offers a fully inclusive direct cremation for a flat $1,480. That price covers everything your family needs for a dignified, lawful, and professionally managed cremation:

  • Respectful Transfer of Remains: Collection of your loved one from any Toronto-area hospital, hospice facility, long-term care home, or private residence within the GTA service area.
  • Professional Preparation & Sheltering: Refrigerated care of the deceased at a licensed facility while authorizations and legal documentation are completed.
  • Death Registration: Filing of the Statement of Death with Service Ontario and coordination of the death certificate through the Office of the Registrar General.
  • Coroner Permit Coordination: Submission of the cremation authorization request to the Office of the Chief Coroner of Ontario — a mandatory step for all cremations in the province.
  • The Cremation: Performed at a licensed Ontario crematorium in strict compliance with the Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, 2002 (FBCSA) and all applicable Bereavement Authority of Ontario (BAO) standards.
  • Return of Cremated Remains: Dignified return of your loved one’s ashes in a basic, respectful temporary container.

Our Toronto partner coordinates directly with the region’s major care institutions, including Toronto General Hospital, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, St. Michael’s Hospital, Humber River Hospital, Michael Garron Hospital (East Toronto), and William Osler Health System in Etobicoke and Brampton. Families with a loved one in the care of Kensington Hospice, Hospice Toronto, or Humber Palliative Care will find our team experienced in managing respectful transfers from these facilities with the sensitivity these circumstances require.

Navigating Ontario Cremation Laws and Toronto Vital Records

Understanding Ontario’s regulatory requirements is an important part of arranging a cremation with confidence. The DFS Memorials network and our Toronto partner manage every step of this process on your family’s behalf — but knowing what’s involved helps you understand why cremation in Ontario typically takes 7 to 14 business days from the time of death to the return of ashes.

The Bereavement Authority of Ontario (BAO) ~ All funeral establishments, cremation providers, and transfer services operating in Ontario must be licensed and regulated by the Bereavement Authority of Ontario. Every provider in the DFS Memorials network is fully BAO-licensed. You can verify any provider’s licence at any time through the BAO’s public licensee search at thebao.ca. If a provider cannot confirm their BAO licence number, that is a serious red flag.

The Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, 2002 (FBCSA) Ontario’s primary legislation governing cremation establishes the framework for provider licensing, prepaid funeral contracts, consumer protections, and the handling of human remains. Under the FBCSA, families have the right to an itemized price list before signing any authorization — a right worth exercising when comparing providers.

Coroner Authorization — Mandatory for All Ontario Cremations ~ Unlike burial, cremation is irreversible. Ontario law therefore requires that the Office of the Chief Coroner review and authorize every cremation before it can proceed. The attending physician or medical examiner completes a Medical Certificate of Death, and the funeral director submits a cremation permit application to the Coroner’s office. This review typically takes 24 to 72 hours and cannot be bypassed or expedited. Our team manages this filing entirely.

Death Registration and Certificates in Ontario ~ The Statement of Death must be registered with the Office of the Registrar General through Service Ontario. Death certificates can be ordered through ServiceOntario.ca or in person at a ServiceOntario location. In 2026, a certified copy of a death certificate in Ontario costs $25.00. Most estates and insurance claims require multiple certified copies — we recommend ordering at least four to five at the time of initial application.

What You Can Do With Cremated Remains in Toronto

The City of Toronto and Province of Ontario permit the scattering of cremated remains on private land with the landowner’s consent. Scattering in Lake Ontario and other waterways is governed by Environment and Climate Change Canada regulations and generally requires that remains be scattered at least one nautical mile from shore, with no container. Toronto Public Parks (including High Park and Tommy Thompson Park) require a permit from the City of Toronto for the scattering of ashes on parkland — this is straightforward to obtain but must be arranged in advance. Many families also choose columbarium niches at sites such as Mount Pleasant Cemetery, St. James Cemetery, or the Toronto Necropolis for permanent interment of cremated remains.
